Bundang CHA Hospital, part of CHA University, and the medical device company AMCG signed an agreement to run clinical trials validating the effectiveness of magnetocardiography (MCG), a precision diagnostic system for cardiac disease.

The two sides agreed to cooperate on joint research, on sharing regulatory information for the clinical trials, and on the shared use of facilities and equipment.

Professor Sung Jung-hoon of the cardiology department at Bundang CHA Hospital, who leads the clinical research, described the hospital as a research-centred institution with an open convergence research infrastructure built on ICT, and said he hoped the work with AMCG would allow cardiac abnormalities and arrhythmia-related disease to be found early.

According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Korea after cancer. Even so, initial diagnosis still relies on the electrocardiogram, a test developed roughly a century ago.

The MCG system replaces the staged sequence of electrocardiography, exercise stress testing, echocardiography, CT and angiography with a single examination, and uses neither radiation nor contrast agents.
